Choo Choo Charley was an engineer.  Maybe that's him in the cab of the 1409, bringing out a wave to the photographer. The flagman in the road was nicknamed "Red", because of his eternally sun-burned-looking skin. He lived in a bunk room in the freight station, and rumor had it that he secured his position by hanging around the railroad yard so much that the railroad finally gave him a job. On reflection, that doesn't seem very likely, but back then, the photographer believed it, and hoped that some railroad official would notice how much time he spent hanging around the yard.  (Photo by Thomas Allen Kelley)
