A Study Of . . . Washington NJ / Hampton Branch Toward The Foreground, #012

#012 original washington house, background; hampton branch, foreground

A rare shot.  This photo was taken from Railroad Ave, and shows the crossing watchman's shanty standing between the DL&W Hampton branch (foreground) and the Phillipsburg branch in 1915. The large building is the [original] Washington House, which was a restaurant and boarding house. It was later purchased by Hogar Bugge, who built and operated the Parkdale Dairy behind this house. On the far left can be seen the embankment which was the old high line to Phillipsburg before the new line was built in 1901.  (Photo given to Thomas Allen Kelley by Alvin Smith; caption by Alvin Smith)
