A Study Of . . . Washington NJ / Railroad Station Demolition, Thu, Sep 30, 1982, #002

#002 washington nj railroad station demolition

Ambush.  On Friday, Sep 17, 1982, at the behest of Conrail, a wrecking crew showed up at the station without warning, and without a demolition permit, to begin razing the long-suffering building. Before the surprised boro officials could scramble up a stop-work order (on the basis that no demolition permit had been obtained by Conrail), part of the roof had already been obliterated.  (Photo and caption by Thomas Allen Kelley)
