A Study Of . . . Washington NJ / Post Office On W Washington Ave, #001 |
|
Mail's in. Prior to 1939, the post office moved from place to place, using a number of different rented locations on Belvidere Ave and Washington Ave, the one pictured above being on West Washington Ave around 1917. In those days, the government did not build permanent postal locations in the smaller towns, perhaps feeling that enough revenue could not be generated to justify the building expenditure and operating costs. Finally, though, the town obtained a permanent facility at the end of 1939, built at 36 Belvidere Ave. (Caption by Thomas Allen Kelley) |
