A Study Of . . . Washington NJ / Skalla Park Entranceway Arch, #011 |
|
The arrival arch. Skalla Park was opened in 1910, two days before the fourth of July, by Mr & Mrs Frank Skalla. The park covered the area between Stewart St & State St (the north and south borders), and Wandling Ave & Grand Ave (the east and west borders), and this homegrown arch, which is reminiscent of the 2nd Little Pig's house that was made of sticks, beckoned visitors to the park's entrance on Wandling. Open 2 or 3 days a week, the park had the usual merry-go-round and swings, but it also had a dance pavilion, concert facilities, a roller skating rink, AND silent movie screenings!
