A Study Of . . . Niagara Falls / Both Falls, #008 |
|
Play ball . . . ? A ball field smack dab in the middle of the tourist district? Certainly not. It's the Oakes Garden Theatre, named after the man who donated the land to the Niagara Parks Commission, Sir Harry Oakes, a Niagara Falls resident and philanthropist. When the Clifton Hotel was destroyed by fire on December 31, 1932, and very shortly after, the neighboring Lafayette Hotel was razed, Sir Harry bought these two sites and gave them to the Commission. A floral garden amphitheatre was designed and built, and opened to the public on September 18, 1937. |
