A Study Of . . . Niagara Falls / Both Falls, #001 |
|
Bridging the gap: When the Upper Steel Arch Bridge (aka the Falls View Bridge and the Honeymoon Bridge ) was sheared off of its river abutments by a record mass of ice on January 27, 1938, the Rainbow Bridge was built to replace it. Located about 500 feet downstream from the bridge it was replacing, Rainbow was officially opened on November 1, 1941, and was constructed so that no part would be even near the water, and therefore would not be vulnerable to destructive ice floes. |
